SCORESHEET FOR MULTIPLE USERS
For the most accurate results, include as many of your management
team members and/or decision makers, opinion leaders, and
influencers as possible. Have each person answer the questions,
then use the scoresheet in Figure 3.2 to tally multiple-user scores
for the short form. Be sure to make extra copies to accommodate
all of your participants.
Write in the total number of As and Bs selected by each participant
next to each person’s name. Add up the As and the Bs in
each column and write the total at the bottom.Translate the totals
to the corresponding number in the space provided below the
chart, then compare the final four-digit number to the profile list.
Now match the resulting four-digit number with your company
personality profile.

You can find your company’s personality name with the corresponding
profile and case study narratives in Chapters 4 through 7.
Important note: For consistency, all profiles will be listed in the
order that they appear in Figure 3.3 (left to right, top to bottom).
For those readers who are interested in the corresponding type letters,
we have provided them beneath the titles in this figure only.
Self-validating the results is extremely important if you intend
to put Companies Are People, Too to work in your company.
Rarely does a single person’s viewpoint stand up to the accuracy
test. If you or a small group from the management team announce
to the staff that the company’s personality profile resulting from
your score(s) is “the way it is,” prepare for some resistance from
the troops.
Since this is a consensus-building device, we encourage you to
include several people in this exercise and use the multiple-user
scoresheet. In CAP2 workshops, we prepare a worksheet for characteristic
strengths and one for characteristic weaknesses. We
then divide the users into small groups to discuss the results. If
the profile is accurate, the groups should be able to list two or
three examples of how each strength and weakness comes to life
in the company.

For example, a paint retailer that profiled as a “Thriving on
Risky Business” personality has as a strength: “A solution-oriented
organization that is excellent at responding to situations as they
emerge, resulting in a firefighter or gunslinger mentality. Values
action more than ideas.”The workshop group listed examples that
supported that this is, in fact, a strength of the company, such as,
“When a complaint is received, we go straight to the job site to
solve the problem.We are empowered to make decisions on the
spot to correct the situation. Our action-oriented response has
done a lot to help us get repeat business.” On the other hand, a
weakness on the profile indicated that this was “an organization
that tends to neither understand nor care about what makes people
tick. Its emphasis on action can create an impatient, demanding
environment.” The group noted that there was no formal review
system in place, morale was low, and staff turnover was higher than
industry norms.
Figure 3.4 shows a sample strengths worksheet for a community
college that profiled as “Action, Action—We Want Action!”
Figure 3.5 shows a sample weaknesses worksheet for the same
“Action, Action—We Want Action!” community college.
In the next four chapters we will focus on organizational profiles
and case studies, giving you an in-depth look at the strengths
and weaknesses of the different personalities. We also connect
each personality with a real life company.
